Outreach Community Counseling Center in Carol Stream
The Outreach Community Counseling Center in Carol Stream provides individual, family, and group therapy for clients from the Carol Stream area. These services are offered though insurance (including Medicaid) or on a scholarship basis; no one is refused services due to inability to pay a fee. We work with a wide range of children, families, couples, and individual issues, including family conflict, domestic violence, child abuse and neglect, divorce and other losses, trauma, substance abuse, anxiety and depression. Opportunities are available to offer psychoeducational/skills-based groups at Outreach Community Center or OCCC.
Program:
The Assessment Clinic
The Assessment Clinic through Outreach provides psychological evaluation and consultation services to a broad spectrum of persons, ages and presenting problems. Referrals are received from the community (community center, other counseling programs, local schools, medical clinics, and police departments) and often are geared to clarifying diagnosis (i.e.-ADHD, learning disabilities, ASD, mood disorders, etc.), level of functioning and so on. Doctoral practicum students are actively involved in these evaluations.
Responsibilities/Opportunities:
The doctoral practicum student’s caseload will vary depending on the nature of the practicum. If they are completing a clerkship or advanced practicum, their caseload will consist of both testing and therapy clients, including documentation and case notes plus collateral case contacts (school, court, police, DCFS) as needed. If the student is completing a testing practicum, they will be completing a wide variety of evaluations for most of their time and may also carry a small therapy caseload of community referrals. If they are completing a therapy practicum, their caseload will consist of 8-12 therapy clients and 1-2 groups, including documentation and case notes plus collateral case contacts (school, court, police, DCFS) as needed.
The student will attend weekly supervision and case staffings and all intern training as scheduled. The student may have the opportunity to co-lead therapy groups and parenting workshops and to consult with the children’s programs at OCC. Practicum and clerkship students will have the opportunity to administer a wide variety of psychological tests for children, adolescents and adults and will be taught best practices for selecting “gold standard” measures and addressing individual and cultural diversity.
Requirements:
Doctoral practicum candidates must have completed the first year of a doctoral program in psychology and must have successfully completed assessment classes (i.e., Intellectual Assessment, Projective Assessment) prior to the start of their practicum. Applicants must be supportive of the agency’s statement of Mission and Faith and complete an HR application prior to ACEPT Pre-notification Day. Background checks will be required prior to the start of the training year.
Schedule/Hours:
Doctoral practicums generally run from mid-July through the end of May (this schedule may be negotiated based on student and program needs). A commitment of 20 hours per week is required. Schedule must accommodate weekly supervision, team staffings, and programmatic responsibilities.
Supervision and Training:
The doctoral practicum training experience at the Center is based on a team model. All practicum students and interns participate with staff in the weekly clinical staffings. Individual supervision is provided on a weekly basis. Supervision for doctoral practicum or clerkships students is provided by a Licensed Clinical Psychologist. Practicum students receive additional supervision from the doctoral intern as needed. The agency also provides initial and ongoing clinical training for practicum students and interns from all three sites. Practicum students are also invited to attend the Chicago Area Christian Training Consortium’s weekly training seminar as their schedule allows.
